George Fan knew he wanted to make video games ever since the 3rd grade, where he spent way too many hours on the playground coming up with video game ideas with his friend Dave.
After graduating from UC Berkeley with a degree in Computer Science, George joined the internet game company Arcade Planet, where he created his first “real” game, Wrath of the Gopher. Shortly after that, George started brewing ideas about a game featuring fish that poop money. It was designed and coded in his bedroom and called “Insaniquarium”, a game which won him the “Innovation in Game Design” award at the 2002 Independent Games Festival. George worked with PopCap Games to create the deluxe version of Insaniquarium, which became a big hit in the casual games arena.
Around that time, George was offered a chance to work at Blizzard Entertainment, where he did AI programming and designed a bunch of baddies in their upcoming game Diablo III. Most recently, George joined up with PopCap Games and created what he hopes will be the next big thing: Plants vs. Zombies. His next video game will be about otters, and will be titled “You Otter Win at This Game!”
George’s ideal afternoon involves playing Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and enjoying a bowl of Beef Noodle Soup while listening to Porcupine Tree during which he is visited by Optimus Prime. He also enjoys coming up with improbable, contrived scenarios that illustrate a bunch of his favorite things in just one sentence.
George lives in Redwood Shores with his beautiful, talented girlfriend Laura and their grungy black cat Metroid.
